Wine Pairings and the 2014 Vintage of Garys’ Vineyard

Lucia, Gary's Vineyard, Pinot Noir 2014

How many grape growers do you know who install a bathtub in their vineyard to spend more time among the vines? When it comes to wine pairings, Gary Pisoni likes to keep his Pinot Noir close. In fact, the whole Pisoni family is crazy about Pinot Noir pairings. As we prepare to release the latest Lucia wines from the Garys’ Vineyard, our favorite Pinot Noir-friendly meals are on our minds—like a picnic on the ranch with Jane Pisoni’s homemade venison sausage, salad from Pisoni Farms and wine from our mountain vineyards.

We favor superb ingredients and simple, time-tested preparations, taking the same approach to food as our world-class wines. Our painstaking efforts in the vineyard and the winery pair beautifully with unfussy foods in real settings, from a casual family supper to a barbecue with friends.

We may take a down-to-earth approach to pairing, but our wines continue to rank high on the critics’ lists, including Wine Spectator’s top 100 wines. Our Syrah has been called “California Syrah at its finest” by the San Francisco Chronicle. In the Wine Advocate, Jeb Dunnuck writes that the Lucia releases are consistently “some of the top wines I taste from the Santa Lucia Highlands.”

Pinot Parings

A chartered fishing boat for fresh-caught Monterey Bay salmon to grill in the vineyard. And if it’s sunny, I’ll fill the tub!
Gary Pisoni, EPICURE
I’d pair the 2014 Pinot with salad from my garden: beets, cucumber, tomatoes, string beans and corn—plus feta, olive oil, balsamic vinegar and grilled chicken.
Mark Pisoni, LOCAVORE
Anything from my backyard pizza oven would taste great with this Pinot Noir. A wood fire-roasted chicken sounds perfect.

Garys' Vineyard

2014 Lucia Garys’ Vineyard Pinot Noir

Crushed violets and wild strawberries. Possessing a deep red color and a beautiful nose, the Lucia Garys’ Vineyard Pinot Noir is also accented with vibrant boysenberry, allspice, and forest floor notes. Gentle, elegant tannins have become a common thread of running through this Garys’ Vineyard wine and contribute to its approachable character and versatility with foods. Selective amounts of whole cluster and 100% native fermentation add greater depth and complexity to the long texture. Enjoy now or age in the cellar for a decade.

2014 Lucia Garys’ Vineyard Syrah

Explosive aromas leap from the glass. The Lucia Garys’ Vineyard Syrah has intense aromas of wildflowers, wet rocks, fresh white pepper and a subtle gaminess. This wine has a striking focus and beauty. Primarily whole–cluster fermentation (also requiring foot-treading) gives great depth to the structure and “lift” to the nose. Tannins are full and age worthy, while at the same time, inviting. Given the right food pairing, this wine is hard to resist now, but will age gracefully for many years in the cellar.
