2022 Pisoni Estate: Fall Release

For the Pisoni Family, fall is a time to give thanks for Pinot Noir. It’s also the perfect time to honor their maverick winemaker, Gary, who had the vision to create the spectacular acreage of Pisoni Vineyards from hard-scrabble soil his family allotted to graze horses and cattle. In two short decades, Gary transformed this property into what wine critic and Vinous founder Antonio Galloni named “. . .
one of the region’s most iconic sites . . .” in the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA.
In the 1970s people hiked the slopes of the Santa Lucia Highlands to take in the area’s beauty, but the idea of growing high-quality grapes would not have occurred to the majority. Water was scarce and the granite-laced soil unyielding. However, the naysayers and challenging conditions did not stop Gary Pisoni from first planting vines in 1982. By 1997, the Pisoni Vineyards name was seen on the labels of premier wineries who were buying grapes from Gary. Two short years later, the Wine Spectator published an article featuring the rise of Pisoni Vineyards and described his passion for farming and quality. In the 1999 article, Wine Spectator wrote that “what makes the vineyard special is Pisoni himself.”
Impossible, unbelievable, undoable: none of these pronouncements fazed Gary. If his proposition was challenging, he would just go at it with gusto. Nonetheless, it would take not just his unusual creativity and his unwillingness to take no for answer, but unceasing energy and remarkable boldness for Gary to realize his dream of establishing Pinot Noir vines on the Pisoni Family’s mountain land. Ten years and five dry wells would come and go before he saw water gush from the ground. If you visit Pisoni Vineyards today, you can drink a glass of one of the family’s distinguished Estate Pinot Noir vintages while overlooking the intricate rock work Gary designed to frame the waterfall the sixth successful well created. Every stone laid and path forged on this beautiful estate brought Gary one step closer to his vision in the mountainside.

It’s hard to pin down what allowed this small-town boy from Gonzales, California to pursue a dream to make wine that would become known across the globe. Maybe it was the early 1900s-era home of his great aunt where he would often play as a child that spurred his idea. He has now lived in that same home for nearly 50 years, with its dirt-floor cellar for storing wine barrels. Maybe family tradition helped sustain him—he began making wine for friends in the 1970s in an antique tank his grandparents used to craft their own wine for the family during Prohibition. It didn’t hurt that while barely out of his teens, he encountered a sommelier for the first time while in Puerto Rico on a trip to sell onions from his parents’ vegetable farm in the Salinas Valley. Observing the sommelier do his work, Gary thought that with time, effort, and education, he might also learn to swirl, taste, and judge what distinguishes the best bottles from the rest.
Achieving glamorous dreams like Gary’s isn’t solely a matter of good mentorship, though. Working to do something frowned upon—something new—also requires seriousness of purpose and unusual strength of character. And Gary was an iconoclast born rather than made. In college, while most of his San Jose State classmates contented themselves with hauling kegs of beer to parties, Gary signed up for a tasting class on campus so that he could sample wines from regions across the globe. By the early 1980s, he was bringing his dog-eared copy of Michael Broadbent’s famous The Great Vintage Wine Book along when he chose bottles at his favorite wine shops in Monterey and San Francisco. Before he was thirty, he had bought just about every book on wine and read them all.
Tasting the great wines of the world helped to develop Gary’s palate. But there was something besides a wide-ranging perspective that drove him to insist on hand farming methods to achieve the highest quality fruit. It was a commitment and respect to the land and the vines, and a trust that with the right care, they would produce wine on par with those bottles he drank in his old college classroom. More than any other single quality, what strikes people most about Gary is love for life and how much he enjoys sharing a glass of wine with friends and touring guests through the vineyard in his jeep. It’s this love for his family’s acreage in the Santa Lucia Highlands that helped spur Gary’s innate talents as a winemaker. Child’s play, he thought, in the end, to surmount obstacles when your goal is to make wine that communicates the distinctive character of this land.

Pisoni Estate Selections
The 2022 Pisoni Estate Chardonnay is created from only four barrels of wine that hail from two small blocks at Pisoni Vineyards. The vines are situated in rocky soil and the plantings date back to 1999. This year the vines started budbreak early and stayed this course throughout the season. The chardonnay is a combination of clones that result in tiny berries and great texture. A vibrant greenish-gold color in the glass is followed by exuberant aromatics. Native fermentation brings about long and complex fermentation, while no stirring of the lees encourages vibrant tension in the wine. The purity is retained by bottling un-fined and un-filtered. In the glass, aromas of white peach, nectarine, Meyer lemon peel, and crushed stone fill the senses. Full and lengthy texture is brought to a refreshing finish with the bright acidity. Drink now or hold for over ten years.
The Pisoni Estate Pinot Noir is comprised of vineyard blocks from the several different ridges and soil types at Pisoni Vineyards. The highly complex terrain and older vines bring about a wildly complex and beautiful expression of Pinot Noir. The early season of 2022 brought phenolic development early, which results in wonderfully pure and rich aromatics followed by excellent tannin structure. Deep purple, this wine leaps from the glass with aromas of violets, spiced plum, lavender, crushed strawberry and rose petal. The texture is equally impressive with rich layers of gentle tannins. On the palate one gains a sense of power from the wine, with evolving richness, and the integration of carefully selected French Oak barrels. After hand-picking, sorting, native fermentation, this wine is aged in barrel without racking or moving for 10 months. Bottling is then carried out carefully and without fining or filtration to obtain the most exquisite Pinot Noir.
