The Prince of Pinot
Raises His Glass to Pisoni

Bottle of the 2016 Pisoni Estate Pinot Noir
Pisoni Estate is the singular Pinot Noir that the Pisoni family bottles each year, and is a sourced from various blocks of their eponymous vineyard.

We’re delighted to announce that Rusty Gaffney recently dedicated an entire article of an issue of his newsletter PinotFile to our 2016 Estate Pinot Noir. “I rarely write about a single wine,” Gaffney owns in “Pisoni Vineyard Pinot Noir: An Iconic Wine Unlike Any Other,” but “the 2016 Pisoni Estate Pinot Noir deserved the honor.” Gaffney, known as the “Prince of Pinot” for his longstanding interest in and expertise tasting Pinot Noir, not only publishes the PinotFile but also judges wine competitions and regularly participates in the James Beard award-winning audio and video program featuring wine-related topics broadcast on the Internet. We consider Gaffney to be an encyclopedia of Pinot Noir, and always enjoy his work.

Typically, he notes in a January 2019 edition of PinotFile, Pisoni’s Estate Pinot Noir is “rich and powerful, but with well-tamed tannins.” The 2016 fruit developed in a year when limited rainfall forced the roots to dig deep for moisture. The result, Gaffney explains, were particularly robust tannins Pisoni’s grape grower Mark managed by dropping a greater than average amount of fruit before harvest and which winemaker Jeff then carefully controlled after harvest in the winery with special attention to the evolution of tannins during fermentation.

“I wish more Pinot lovers could taste this wine, “the wine writer concludes, calling our 2016 Estate Pinot Noir “luscious and dreamy on the palate,” and “a distinctive wine that has no peer.”
