Farming Legends and Family Matriarchs

We’re honored to share two recent pieces by longtime wine journalist Laura Ness that beautifully capture what has always defined Pisoni Family Vineyards: farming as a way of life, wine as an expression of place, and family as the force that holds it all together.
Ness highlights the Pisoni Family in the Fall 2025 issue of Edible Monterey Bay Magazine and in a digital standalone blog post from September 2025 which focuses on the women of the Pisoni Family. In her work, Ness traces the Pisoni story back to the roots of ranching history and forward to the vineyards that are now planted on the same ground. It is a transition shaped by a vision and by the steady confidence of the people who believed in that vision early on. She shines a light on the matriarchs whose influence is sometimes quiet, but impactful, and she reminds readers that the legacy of a vineyard is built as much in kitchens, ledgers, and cellars as it is in rows of vines.
. . . [Gary's] vision to plant vines would create an ecosystem upon which his generationLAURA NESS
and subsequent generations have grown to depend.
Ness captures the core of the Pisoni Estate today represented by careful, hands-on farming and the constant attention to detail required to steward a rugged site through the ever-changing seasons. She highlights biodiversity, beneficial insects, sustainability, and thoughtful vineyard practices, which all reflect the Pisoni philosophy. Quality is cumulative, built one decision at a time, year after year, with respect for the land and the people who care for it. This is an approach to farming that values longevity and community.
Not only did Gary Pisoni plant a vineyard, he set in motion a way of life that now supports the family and the people around it. Ness mentions that Gary’s “. . . vision to plant vines would create an ecosystem upon which his generation and subsequent generations have grown to depend.”
We’re grateful to Laura Ness for capturing the Pisoni story in its entirety—vineyard, wine, family, and tradition, woven together. We hope you enjoy reading her work, and we hope it adds another layer of perspective the next time you open a bottle of Pisoni wine.
I'm especially proud of how our wines have been able to make so many people happy.GARY PISONI
